A charming village, located in a Natural Park with castles and grand mansions used as summer houses by the Portuguese royalty. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site and owing to its beauty is one of the most visited sites in Portugal. Throughout the years has enchanted kings and inspired poets, such as Lord Byron.
While taking a brief tour through the historic centre, you’ll find yourself surrounded by old houses that have been converted into small shops and bakeries, selling local products and handicrafts.
The Park is located on the western side and it holds more than 200 species of vertebrates: 33 mammal species, more than 160 bird species, 12 amphibian species, 20 reptilian species and 9 sweet water fish species.
A summer palace constructed in the 19th Century by Kind consort Ferdinand II of Portugal. He turned a 16th Century monastery ruins into one of the most eclectic palaces in Europe by blending different types of Gothic, Egyptian, Moorish and Renaissance elements to it. Around the palace he created a park where he planted different exotic species of trees from all over the world. An astonishing fairytale palace located on one of the highest peaks of the Sintra mountain range.
The wine region of Colares was defined in 1908, becoming the second oldest demarcated region in the country. The type of soil, the native grape varieties, the traditional planting practices of the vineyards, the humid climate and the proximity of the sea with very strong sea winds, give the wine unique characteristics.
A tourism highlight, especially when the sea is rough and from where you can enjoy magnificent sunsets.
Considered one of the most beautiful beach of the region of Lisbon was the place of a James Bond movie: ‘On her majesty’s Secret Service’.
The Moors Castle is a fortification built with granite blocks in the 10th century after the Muslim conquest of the Iberian Peninsula. The outer wall has a pathway from which you can admire a beautiful view to the village, the National Palace of Sintra, the Pena Palace, the natural park and the Atlantic Ocean.
One of the most surprising and mysterious of all Sintra’s monuments. A magical place located on the outskirts of the village. Built in the 20th century, by Carvalho Monteiro a man with a vast culture and a great philanthropist.
