A charming village located in a Natural Park with castles and grand mansions. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site. And, due to its natural beauty and unique atmosphere, Sintra is the most visited village in Portugal.
Through the historical center, you’ll find yourself surrounded by old houses converted into small shops and bakeries. There, they sell local products, regional pastries, and handicrafts.
Belém is the launching point for the Portuguese discoveries, with significant historic monuments in a beautiful open riverside setting. Here you can visit the Belem Tower, the Discoveries Monument, the church of the Jerónimos Monastery. Also, you can taste the world-famous “Pastel de Belém”.
An astonishing fairytale palace located on one of the highest peaks of the Sintra Mountains. King consort Ferdinand II of Portugal built Pena Palace in the 19th Century. It’s one of the most eclectic palaces in Europe. And, it blends different artistic movements such as Gothic, Egyptian, Moorish and Renaissance. Around the palace the King created a park where he planted different exotic species of trees from all over the world.
One of the most surprising and mysterious of all Sintra’s monuments. A magical place located on the outskirts of the village. Carvalho Monteiro, a man with a vast culture and a great philanthropist, built it in the first years of the 20th century.
A fortification built with granite blocks in the 10th century after the Muslim conquest of the Iberian Peninsula. From there you can admire a beautiful view of the village, the National Palace of Sintra, the Pena Palace, the natural park, and the Atlantic Ocean.
Considered the most western point of mainland Europe, it’s located on a cliff with more than 140 meters of height, offering you breathtaking views.
The main area of interest is Praça do Comércio, one of the largest squares in Europe and, for many centuries, the main entrance of the city of Lisbon. This square is full of terraces and restaurants where you can enjoy the landscape and Lisbon’s pace. To get to the city center, you must go through the Rua Augusta Arch and walk along Augusta street.
The most traditional and oldest neighborhood of Lisbon composed of a maze of narrow streets, tortuous alleys, and steep flights of stairs. It’s the birthplace of ‘Fado,’ a traditional song of Lisbon that UNESCO classified as World Cultural Heritage. Alfama is known internationally for its Fado Houses, and the Popular Saints’ Festival held in Lisbon throughout June.
