The main area of interest is Praça do Comércio, one of the largest squares in Europe, and for many centuries, the main entrance of the city of Lisboa. With a marvellous view of the Tagus River, it extends to the unmissable Cais das Colunas. This square is full of terraces and restaurants where you can enjoy the landscape and Lisboa’s pace. To get to the city center, you must go through the Arc de Triomphe and walk along Augusta street.
Visit the top of the Rua Augusta Arch. Here, you will have an outstanding truly unique and impressive view of Lisboa’s downtown and the Tagus River.
Considered the ‘Heart’ of Lisboa. The Baixa neighbourhood was reconstructed after the massive earthquake of 1755 with neoclassical-style buildings and innovative anti-seismic structures. Its streets are covered in Portuguese pavement, a traditional-style pavement made with small flat pieces of stones arranged in a pattern or image, like a mosaic.
Located on the highest hill of Lisboa and with a marvellous view over the city, it’s one of the most emblematic monuments of Lisbon and home of the Portuguese royalty for centuries. The Moors built this military fort in the 11th century and the first king of Portugal Dom Afonso Henriques conquered it on October 25th of 1147.
A 13th century-old Saint Dominic’s church, the first Dominican church in Lisboa. Also, the most important church for beautiful royal weddings during centuries. Earthquakes and a brutal fire in 1959 destroyed the church on several occasions. Unfortunately, its impressive interior decorated in gilded woodcarvings and valuable paintings were destroyed. It reopened in 1994 and the marks of the fire left exposed on the church walls give it a unique and fascinating atmosphere.
The most traditional and oldest neighbourhood of Lisboa composed of a maze of narrow streets, tortuous alleys and steep flights of stairs. It’s the birthplace of ‘Fado’, a traditional song of Lisboa, wish UNESCO classifies as World Cultural Heritage. Alfama is known internationally for its Fado Houses and the Popular Saints’ Festival held in Lisbon throughout June.
