The salty wines of Colares

The wine region of Colares was defined in 1908, becoming the second oldest demarcated region in the country.
Enologists believe that its history began with the introduction of the “Ramisco” grape in the region by king D. Afonso III (13th Century), who brought it from France.

However, it was only in 1865 that the region of Colares became famous due to the arrival of the phylloxera in Portugal. An insect, from America, attacked the roots of the vines damaging the country’s vineyards.
All across Europe, the phylloxera was stopped by grafting European vines onto American rootstocks, which are immune to the bug, and vineyards could be replanted.
In Colares, the sandy soil vines due to the depth of the roots did not allow the propagation of the insect as it did in other types of soils and thus the vines were not damaged.
All European vines are now grafted but Colares vines remain on their own roots.

Currently, with a vineyard area of 37 Acres and an annual production of 35,000 bottles, the wine of Colares is considered the most expensive wine in the country.
The type of soil, the native grape varieties, the traditional planting practices of the vineyards, the humid climate and the proximity of the sea with very strong sea winds, give the wine unique characteristics.

On the full-day tour The Wonders of Sintra or Sintra off-road, Portugal Premium Tours as an optional experience offers a tasting of the Colares wines.
Of the four existing wine producers in the region, the Viúva Gomes Winery was one of the elected ones.
A winery that exudes history and passion for Colares wine!
The wine tastings are accompanied by a conversation with the producer.
An unique experience you will not want to miss.

Our wine of choice is:

Viúva Gomes White
The Malvasia de Colares grape, native in this region, as well as its maritime environment, provide a mineral character to this wine, with maritime and iodine aromatic notes. In the mouth it’s fresh and salty, with a dry structure and light Atlantic acidity.
The perfect choice for a hot summer day.

Cheers!
