Marvão, have you been here?

A small village in Alentejo, located on the top of a hill and surrounded by walls. Marvão is one of Portugal’s most charming places that you have to visit!

The need for protection against invasions explains the strategic position on the top of a difficult access hill, close to the Spanish border. Nowadays those are worries from the past but what remains is the privileged location of Marvão that has become a magnificent fortress city, almost frozen in time. The view is breathtaking with an unparalleled scenery. The 12th century castle is the local icon and the main attraction.

There are other places of interest, such as the Nossa Senhora da Estrela Convent that dates to 1448 and originated from an alleged apparition of the Virgin Mary.

Besides its medieval charm, Marvão also has even older attractions like several menhirs and dolmens. Ana amazing place to visit in Marvão is Ammaia, an ancient Roman city with an invaluable archeological value.
