A city in the Centre of Portugal, Alcobaça is surrounded by history and tales of ancient times. Dating back to the 12th century, it’s a wonderful place to visit.
Alcobaça originated from the religious Cistercian Order that had great power in this area and prospered for many centuries. Portugal’s first King, Dom Afonso Henriques, donated these lands to the monks and the building of the Monastery of Alcobaça started in 1178.
The Monastery is the city’s most iconic monument and it’s incredibly beautiful. Regarding the stunning architecture we highlight the gorgeous façade and admirably sized church. Nevertheless, its biggest charm is the love story of King Dom Pedro and Dona Inês.
Portugal’s most romantic and tragic love story ended here. Pedro and Inês tombs are truly works of art, filled with details and meticulously decorated. The tombs face each other so that when the day of the Last Judgement comes, the two lovers will rapidly see each other.
Alcobaça is located on a very beautiful and interesting area with several other points of interest. From the local beaches São Martinho do Porto stands out with its adorable shell shaped bay as well as the mountain Serra de Aire e Candeeiros.
Another typical characteristic of Alcobaça is the delicious conventual pastries. Here you can taste fantastic examples of traditional Portuguese sweets like ‘Pudim de Ovos’ and ‘Trouxas-de-ovos’.
Come discover Alcobaça and be marveled by this inspiring city!
